Tyre Info

If a tyre is old it may be time to replace it even if the treads look fine. Here are some checks you can do to know if a tyre is too old and needs to be replaced.

YOU CAN KNOW THE AGE OF A TYRE EASILY

All tyres display a coded date of manufacture. You can read this code on the side wall of the tyre. The first two digits of the code represent the week of manufacture and the next two digits the year.

IF THE TYRE IS NOT USED IT AGES FASTER

All tyres display a coded date of manufacture. You can read this code on the side wall of the tyre. The first two digits of the code represent the week of manufacture and the next two digits the year.

YOU CAN IDENTIFY TYRE AGEING BY LOOKING FOR CRACKS

If a tyre has aged it will show as cracks on the sidewall. Of course the tread depth is also an indicator and if the tread depth is too little the tyre needs to be replaced.

TYRES MORE THAN SIX YEARS OLD MAY NOT BE SAFE

Premature tyre ageing can cause it to fail. If you have doubts about a tyre it is best to get a professional opinion. Spare wheels see less usage and they should be checked as well.

Great tyres have a lot in common but different tyres do respond differently. Tyre testing can help you identify the best manufacturers and tyres for specific conditions. You should choose a tyre suited to your driving conditions.

BRAKING TEST

Bringing the car quickly to a safe halt is a critical function of the tyre. The car tyre you choose will determine how fast your car will be able to stop. Also while braking in wet conditions aquaplaning should not occur.

AQUAPLANING TEST – WHEN A WET TYRE LOSES GRIP

If a tyre’s tread is not able to move the water away fast enough then aquaplaning may take place. The tyre instead of running on the road will be running on water and will lose grip. Tyres designed for wet conditions have special tread design to move the water away faster.

TYRE NOISE TEST

A quiet ride is a more comfortable ride. Tyres are required to meet noise limit norms but different tyres do produce different amounts of noise. Some tyres are able to muffle the noise and give a quieter ride.

ROLLING RESISTANCE TEST FOR IDENTIFYING ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY TYRES

Tyres which offer lesser rolling resistance will give you better mileage making them more environmentally friendly. One factor is having the right air pressure in the tyres at all times. But by their design and rubber compound formulation too tyres offer different levels of rolling resistance. So some tyres give more mileage than others.

A tyre may appear to be a simple circular object made with rubber but in fact tyres are high technology products and there is much more to them than a quality rubber compound.
Here are some recent developments :

TYRES THAT CAN RUN FLAT

Two innovative features enable a tyre to run flat. One is a reinforced sidewall which allows the tyre to bear the weight of the car without getting damaged. The other are rubber clips which prevent the tyre rim, on which the tyre is mounted, from piercing the tyre. You also have the option of a gel tyre which is bonded to the tyre and makes it perform as a run flat tyre. Run flat tyres make sure you are not stranded when you have a puncture and can drive some way further and get help.

FILLING YOUR TYRES WITH NITROGEN

When you fill your car tyres with nitrogen the tyre pressure is maintained for longer. Nitrogen is an inert and safe gas. Nitrogen filling is not common among regular car users but for racing car and aviation tyres, it is standard practice.
